Why AIs Won’t Replace Developers Anytime Soon

I’m sure that Artificial Intelligences (AIs) won’t replace developers, at least not for now, not for a long time. Recently, I taught a module in a computing course about AI, and it’s a topic I enjoy discussing with almost everyone. The question is simple, but the answers vary greatly, and I love to understand people’s perceptions.

It’s a fact that AI evolution over the last decade has been astounding; we’ve reached the point where the Turing test is easily passed by machines. Yet, the phrase Alan Turing used in his article still echoes in my mind: “Can machines think?” This topic is trending, and many people haven’t taken the time to ponder it or even understand what’s happening. I don’t blame those who only know how to use ChatGPT and don’t want to understand how training is done or anything more in-depth — most will find the math behind it too difficult.

We Seek to Understand How We Work

I believe we must consider that everyone developing any type of artificial intelligence uses human “intelligence” as a benchmark to measure the machine’s “intelligence.” That is, we are trying to develop something that thinks or has a way of thinking similar to ours.

Knowing this and delving into the world of AIs — as an instructor and a parent — the idea that comes to my mind is that we have a “child” in development. This means that studying AI…
